Hunting rifle chambers for the .260 won’t yield the best results at distance; nor will ordinary match bullets. Very Low Drag profiles, justly favored by long-range marksmen, may require sharper twist than the standard 1:9, which is sufficient for most boat-tail game bullets. The .260 will drive 140-grain MatchKings over 2,800 fps, equaling the performance of the slightly longer 6.5x55.

Another target cartridge with impressive credentials at extended range is the 6.5x47 Lapua. Like the 6x47, this short-action cartridge uses Small Rifle primers, which many shooters insist deliver more uniform ignition than Large Rifle primers. Introduced by its namesake Finnish ammunition firm in 2006, the 6.5x47 hull is 4mm shorter than the .308’s. It operates at slightly lower pressure (55,000 psi versus 62,000), and launches a 140-grain bullet at about 2,670 fps. Not long ago, I engaged a well-known rifle maker to barrel a Model 700 Remington to 6.5x47. Feeding inconsistencies in the early stages caused us to switch to the .260 Remington. Like many short rounds that will cycle through actions designed for the .308 clan, the 6.5x47 with a long, tapered bullet does not stack on or move from the follower exactly the same as a cartridge longer in the body and with a hunting bullet.

Wayne’s 6.5 Creedmoor, by Magnum Research and GreyBull Precision, is a nail-driver!
